How to put your business on Google Maps, step by step

A free Google Business Profile is the fastest way to get calls from nearby customers. Follow these steps to set it up properly.

Google Business Profile is the free listing that appears on Google Maps and on the right side of Google Search. For local businesses it is often the biggest source of new calls and visits.

Step 1: Create or claim your profile

Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account that the business controls. Search for your business name: if it already exists, claim it; if not, create a new profile.

Step 2: Choose the right category

Your primary category matters more than almost anything else. Pick the most specific one, for example "Hardware store" rather than "Store". You can add secondary categories later.

Step 3: Add your location and contact details

  • Place the pin exactly on your building
  • Use a phone number customers can reach, ideally also on WhatsApp
  • Add your website address
  • Set accurate opening hours, including holidays

Step 4: Verify

Google will ask you to verify that you run the business, usually by a phone call, text message or short video of your premises. Your profile only appears fully after verification.

Step 5: Make it stand out

  • Upload at least 10 real photos: outside, inside, products, team
  • Write a clear description with your main services and area
  • List your products or services with prices
  • Ask happy customers for reviews and reply to every review

Done well, a profile can bring steady calls within weeks. If you would like us to set it up and optimise it for you, it is included in every website package.
